Best Poses for Weight Loss

One reason why people pick up yoga is to fight fat and tone up. Yoga is one of the most effective exercises for weight loss. Studies show that yoga lowers stress hormone levels and can jumpstart your metabolism, so you’ll start burning fat at a higher rate. You’re not running miles upon miles or lifting big weights, but you can see and feel a difference by adding strengthening poses and sequences to your daily schedule. Not only are you losing weight with yoga, your arms, legs, and core will firm up. 


Add these three poses to your practice for lean muscle tone all over your body. An easy way to remember them is to commit to the C’s: 


Chair pose: targets your glutes and thighs. Start by standing with your feet together, facing forward. Inhale and lift your arms overhead with palms facing each other. Exhale and sit back into a squat position. Focus on keeping your knees behind your toes – don’t let them tilt forward! 


Cobra pose: targets your glutes and abs. For this pose, lie face-down on the floor and press your legs and hips down. Lift your head, chest, and upper back off the mat. The key here is keeping your focus forward so your spine stays in line. Push your shoulders back and feel the stretch along your chest and strength along your entire back side. 


Crescent pose: targets your hips, thighs, and abs. Step your left leg back into a lunge position. Inhale and raise both arms overhead, fingertips reaching toward the ceiling. Keep your gaze forward. Hold for a few breaths, then step your left leg forward. Switch legs and repeat.
